Thursday September 10, at the George Wallace House north of Waterford
We were thrilled to be allowed access to the George Wallace house for September's meeting.
If you have heard Alison Bell's presentation on the Stone Houses you may remember that many of the
stone houses in our area were built by Alexander Skinner and George Wallace (separately and together). They both came from the village of Tarves in Aberdeenshire in Scotland and, though they arrived in Townsend about 10 years apart, there is little doubt that their connection goes back to their area of origin.
Skinner did not seem to have built a stone house for himself (the shoemaker's children go barefoot ...), but George built himself a small beauty of a place made of "random rubble brought to courses" high on a hill north of Waterford. Wallace was a Master of the Masonic Lodge for a time - an actual stone mason! He was also a pathmaster overseeing the maintenance of the roads.
